This is the flag of explorers Columbus, Balboa, Ponce de Leon and Magellan in their respective journeys.  The Royal Standard of Spain had a red lion on a white field opposite a yellow castle on a red field.  The Castle is the emblem of the Spanish province of Castile, and the Lion represents Leon.
