The Grand Union or Cambridge flag had a field of thirteen alternate red and white stripes, which symbolized the union of 13 colonies, and the King's Colors in canton. The flag represented the independent nature and determination of colonists, while still maintaining loyalty to Britain. The Grand Union flag was raised at Cambridge, Massachusetts by General George Washington on January 2, 1776.
