South Dakota's flag shows the state's beauty and the work its people perform.  The Missouri River is pictured with the Black Hills in the distance.  A steam boat represents transportation and trade.  Farming, ranching, dairying, mining, manufacturing and lumbering are shown.  The sun's rays encircle the seal. The state motto, The Mount Rushmore State, was added in 1992.
