The Philadelphia Light Horse flag was the first to feature thirteen stripes, each representing a colony. The flag of the first American armed force, the Philadelphia City Cavalry, the Light Horse was established as the first Colonial troop without ties to Britain. Americans fought under this banner at the Battles of Trenton, Princeton and Brandywine.
