The story of Annin Flagmakers is closely connected to the history of the American flag itself. Founded in 1847, Annin is recognized by the company as the oldest and largest flag manufacturer in the United States and remains a sixth-generation family-owned and operated business.

From a New York Ship Chandlery to a Flag Company

The company's roots actually reach back to 1820, when Alexander Annin operated a ship chandlery on New York City's waterfront. Along with supplying nautical equipment, he made and sold flags for merchant ships.

In 1847, Alexander's sons, Edward and Benjamin Annin, established a business devoted specifically to manufacturing flags. Their location at Fulton and William Streets in Manhattan became an important center of the growing American flag industry.

Annin and American History

Annin's flags have appeared at many significant moments in American history. The company supplied flags for President Zachary Taylor's 1849 inauguration, beginning a tradition that Annin says has continued through subsequent presidential inaugurations.

During the Civil War, Annin supplied enormous quantities of flags to the Union. The company's historical records indicate that approximately 1.5 million flags and emblems were sold during the conflict.

The company's flags have also been associated with the opening of the Brooklyn Bridge, polar expeditions, the Iwo Jima flag raising, and the Apollo 11 mission to the moon.

Moving Into the Modern Era

As demand for American flags grew, Annin expanded its manufacturing operations. In response to the surge in demand surrounding World War I, the company built a large, modern manufacturing facility in Verona, New Jersey, which opened in 1918.

Annin continued incorporating new technology while maintaining traditional flag-making skills. Sewing machines, mechanized star-cutting equipment, improved dyes, embroidery technology, and modern manufacturing systems gradually transformed production.

Annin Flagmakers Today

Today, Annin continues to manufacture flags in the United States. The company says it operates three domestic manufacturing facilities and produces more than 4,000 flag products, including American, state, international, military, historical, nautical, and custom flags.

For customers looking for American-made flags, Annin's long history is an important part of the appeal. More than 175 years after the company began making flags, the Annin name remains associated with American manufacturing, traditional craftsmanship, and the enduring importance of the flag.
